Managing IoT: The CIO’s greatest feat

The Internet of Things can deliver unprecedented process efficiency – and save a large organization hundreds of millions of dollars a year. So who should lead the development of IoT and M2M technology within your organization? Likely the CIO. Here’s why.

Making (human) sense of sensors

All change begins with the ability to measure. With increasingly sophisticated sensors – soon to number in the trillions – we’ll be able to expand perception and measurement far beyond our natural human senses. But how much new sensor data do we need?

Creating business value from IoT data

The Internet of Things isn’t just about insight. It’s about actions and outcomes – both of which need business context to be effective. That’s why we built SAP S/4HANA. Learn how this in-memory ERP suite bridges the gap between business processes and IoT insights.

What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?

More than 50 billion devices will be connected to the Internet by 2020. Not just smartphones and tablets, but almost anything with a sensor on it – coffee makers, cars, cattle, machines in production plants, jet engines, oil drills, wearable devices, and more. This network is called the Internet of Things (IoT). These “things” talk to each other, collect streaming data and insights, and can advise people about the best way to use them in real time.

IoT – and the machine-to-machine (M2M) technology behind it – is bringing a kind of “super visibility” to nearly every industry. Imagine utilities and telcos that can predict and prevent service outages, airlines that can remotely monitor and optimize plane performance, and healthcare organizations that can base treatment on real-time genome analysis. With IoT technologies and applications, the business possibilities are virtually endless.
