Technical Capabilities
  • API platform: Two different audiences use SAP API Management and its services: service providers who create API proxies and API products to expose back-end services, and app developers who consume these API proxies and products to create apps for mobile and desktop devices. Client app developers also use our API platform for data persistence and management.  
  • Management user interface (UI): The UI provides browser-based tooling that lets you perform most of the tasks necessary to create, configure, and manage API proxies and products. It offers tight integration with SAP Gateway technology for Open Data Protocol services.
  • API security: SAP API Management provides XML and JSON threat protection, as well as message validation policy for XML Schemas (XSDs) and WSDL definitions.
  • HTTP header filtering and expression validation: The mediation policies that can be defined and associated with an API or service enable extraction, filtering, and manipulation of messages – including headers, URI paths, payloads, and query parameters.
  • Rules enforcement: The software’s API runtime offers fine-grained policy definition and enforcement at the API resource level (e.g. URIs and HTTP verbs).
  • Identity and access management: SAP API Management lets you leverage any external identity provider for authentication and authorization, including Active Directory. It supports the following authentication mechanisms:
    • SAML 2.0: Generate and validate SAML assertions – and use the API platform as an identity provider as well as a service provider.
    • OAuth: Configure and enforce OAuth authorization using out-of-the box policies.
    • Client certificate: Use Client SSL to authenticate and encrypt all messages flowing over the network – from SAP API Management to back-end services.
    • Key and certificate management: Create keyStores and trustStores to provide any necessary keys and X.509 digital certificates.
